Twitter hacked as scammers try to steal bitcoins

In a giant digital attack on Wednesday, The official Twitter accounts of Apple, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and few others were compromised and Hijacked by scammers seemingly trying to con people into sending bitcoins, for allegedly doubling their cryptocurrency. This list of hacked accounts rapidly increased to include Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Uber, Bill Gates, bitcoin specialty firms like Gemini cryptocurrency, and others.

The Joe Biden campaign has told that Twitter had quickly locked down the hacked account and removed the bogus tweet. It appeared that the ability to post tweets from validated accounts-the ones with official blue tick, was disabled by Twitter.

Twitter has mentioned in a tweet that “We are aware of a security incident impacting accounts on Twitter” and “We are investigating and taking steps to fix it. We will update everyone shortly”.

The scam posts tweeted by the scammers, which are now largely deleted, were posted from a series of high profile accounts stating that people had 30 minutes to send Bitcoins, and in return they will get double.

The support team of Twitter stated that “You may be unable to Tweet or reset your password while we review and address this incident”., the centralised database website which monitors transactions made in cryptocurrencies, told that a total of 12.58 bitcoins, amounting equivalent to almost 1,16,000 US dollars, had been sent to the Bitcoin wallets address mentioned in the scam tweets.

The scam tweet which was posted on Elon Musk’s hacked Twitter account stated, “Happy Wednesday! I am giving back Bitcoin to all of my followers. I am doubling all payments sent to the Bitcoin address below. You send 0.1 BTC, I send 0.2 BTC back!” and further added that this “was only going on for 30 minutes”.
